There are so many types of insurance covering many types of things. It can be mind-boggling and sometimes everything just end up sounding alike. How can marine hull insurance be different from a boat insurance or from a cargo insurance? Aren't they all the same? Why do we even have to distinguish them?

Boat Hull Designs

A hull is the body of the boat or the ship. The hull comes in different designs and can be classified into different types. To state a few to give you an idea, there is a hull that has an inverted bell shape because of its shape there is less resistance hence the vessel can have a higher speed. There are some hulls that allow the water to be displaced by the hull and the hull is supported by the pressure of the displaced water. Or, the hull can be built in such a way that there is a lift but displacement still supports the vessel's weight. But the primary importance of a hull is that it provides the ship's buoyancy so that it keeps the vessel afloat and stops it from sinking.

To recap, the hull is the vessel's body, it also has appendages. The hull may have a bulbous bow. The purpose for this is to reduce the wave resistance. When wave resistance is decreased, fuel can be saved. For the ship's increased stability, a keel is fitted to the hull. A rudder can also be fitted to the hull as a control device. Different kinds of hulls and all these appendages are covered by the marine hull insurance.

The importance of the hull cannot be understated since it is the boat's body. Take out the hull, and what do you get? Marine hull insurance insures the hull from while the boat is sailing or is being repaired. Ship owners, the ship owner's agents and manager can avail of the marine hull insurance. But they are not the only persons who can avail of such insurance. Since the insurance also applies when the hull is under repair, shipyards and ship repair companies can avail of the marine hull insurance to ensure the hull from any possible damages while it is within the company's possession.

Boat Insurance - Companies who specialize in marine hull insurance

There are many companies specializing in marine hull insurance. Their policies and conditions would vary from each other but mostly it cannot be argued that the marine hull insurance will cover damages on the ship hull when there are collisions with other vessels or non moving objects.
Depending on the insurance companies, they can give policies which cover the loss of hire of earnings, war risks, builder's risk and the ship repairer's liability. It includes fires, theft, lightning, explosion, perils of the sea or other navigable waters and accidents. For the marine hull insurance to work there must be no negligence of the captain or crew members.

How long would a marine hull insurance last? Owners can sometimes choose between voyage and time. If the owner will choose voyage, the hull will be insured for a particular voyage. But if the owner will choose time, then the hull will be covered for a span of time no matter where the vessel will sail off to. These are just basic information about marine hull insurance. For a more in-depth view, you can ask insurance companies themselves.
